Wal-Mart Drops Lawsuit

Retail giant Wal-Mart has dropped a lawsuit filed against an ex-employee, which the company had filed in order to try and recover huge sums of money put into her health insurance plan. There was a public outcry when the story of the ex-employee came to light, and Wal-Mart has now stated that it intends to drop its action.

The fifty two years old ex-employee was involved in a car accident in 2000, and this left her with brain damage. Wal-Mart is said to have paid hundreds of thousands of pounds towards her care through a trust fund paid through her health insurance plan. The company announced previously that it intended to recover the $470,000 it had spent.

However, Wal-Mart has now issued a statement saying: “Wal-Mart will not seek any reimbursement for the money already spent on Ms. Shank’s care, and we will work with the family to ensure the remaining amounts in the trust can be used for her ongoing care”

The ex-employee, Debbie Shank, said: “It wasn’t me who made this happen, it was the outcry of the people, and if there’s a lesson in this story, it’s that we the people still means something.”
