A wilderness survival school in Colorado has settled a lawsuit with the parents of a man who died during one of its courses. The Boulder Outdoor Survival School has paid an undisclosed amount to the parents of Dave Buschow, who died from dehydration during one of the school’s survival courses in July 2006.
The school has stated that it also plans to introduce an annual scholarship named after the man aimed at people that want to attend the same course that he was on. The parents of Buschow sued the school and four employees claiming that they had been negligent, and their son had died as a result of this negligence.
The president of the school said he hoped that the parents “can find some measure of closure as we all move forward.” The mother of the dead man stated that she felt “appreciation for the positive manner in which our claims were resolved.”
According to reports Buschow died of dehydration, and although officials also on the course had been carrying water none was offered to him. The school will now allow all participants to carry water as well as other emergency items such as satellite phones and GPS devices.
