A group of Skycaps are heading to court after filing a lawsuit against American Airlines, accusing it of depriving them of their valuable tips as a result of charging passengers two dollars per bag as a curb-side check-in fee.
The Skycaps are said to make most of their money from tips, and legal representatives say that they have been deeply affected by the drop ion tips, as most passengers are unwilling to pay them a tip on top of the other fees that they are now being charged.
The fees came in several years ago with American Airlines, with a number of other airlines also imposing similar fees after the 2001 terrorist attacks ion New York left the level of passengers, and subsequently revenue, dwindling.
One lawyer for the Skycaps said: “We are looking for fairness for the hardworking employees who every day help passengers — making travel a little bit easier. Some of these guys have worked for 20, 30 or 40 years as skycaps. This is their profession. These guys’ lives were devastated by this.”
