Pfizer Fights Lawsuit

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is fighting a lawsuit that was filed by the Nigerian government for seven billion dollars. The lawsuit was filed in relation to the drug company’s anti-meningitis medicine, Trovan, which the Nigerian government claims has had an adverse effect on children and their families.
The vice-president of Pfizer in France has described the allegations as groundless. He stated: “The accusations are groundless. The drug had been used with the full knowledge and consent of the authorities, the program met the highest ethical guidelines and the casualties were a result of meningitis, not the treatment.”
An outbreak of meningitis in Nigeria in the mid-1990s prompted the pharmaceutical giant to carry out testing on the antibiotic drug. However, over two-hundred children developed problems or died after taking the anti-meningitis drug, according to reports.
However Pfizer officials insist that there was no wrongdoing on its part, as testing was carried out in accordance with local and international laws.
