According to a recent report the maker of the birth control patch Ortho Evra, Johnson & Johnson, has so far paid out over sixty eight million dollars on settling lawsuits relating to the patch. The patch has been linked to a number of health problems, such as heart attacks, blood clots, and strokes.
The manufacturer has already been named in thousands of state and federal lawsuits. It was introduced in 2002 and was advertised as a convenient alternative to the oral contraceptive pill by Johnson & Johnson. However, alarm bells were raised in 2005 following warning from the Food and Drugs Administration warning of the potential health effects of the patch.
By November 2005 the FDA had already received over twenty reports of life threatening health problems relating to the use of this patch. The following year there was even more information relating to the potential dangers relating to the patch.
Officials claim that Johnson & Johnson was already aware of the dangers of the patch well before the dangers were realised by the FDA or the public, yet the company still advertised the drug as an effective alternative to the regular daily oral contraceptive pill.
