Oil Companies Being Sued Over Destruction Of Community

The inhabitants of a small Eskimo village are filing a lawsuit against a number of oil companies, including BP, Shell, and around twenty other power and oil companies, claiming that their contribution to global warming is destroying the community.
According to reports the small community appears to be melting into the sea off Alaska. The community of Kivalina has fewer than four hundred inhabitants, and the lawsuit alleges that the oil and power companies need to pay to move them to safer grounds, as the increasing temperatures mean that they are no longer protected by the sea ice.
It is thought that is could cost around two hundred million dollars to relocate the tiny village to a safer area. The lawsuit was filed earlier this week in a federal court in San Francisco. The suit also accuses the power companies of creating a “create a false scientific debate” on global warming in a bid to dupe the public.
One official from Exxon Mobil, which is one of the defendants, said that climate changes are taken very seriously by the firm. He said: “Exxon Mobil is taking action by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our operations.”
