A federal judge is allowing a one hundred a five million dollar lawsuit against NBC to go to court. The lawsuit has been filed by the sister of a Dallas prosecutor who was accused of engaging in a sexually explicit online chat with a thirteen year old.
The chat was actually with an adult officer who was posing as a youngster, and was part of a sex sting entitled ‘Dateline NBC: To Catch a Predator’. The idea behind it was to get grown men to engage in sexually explicit chats with officers posing as youngsters, and then lure them to a meeting place where camera crews would be waiting.
According to the lawsuit NBC told officers to go and arrest Louis William Conradt Jr after he failed to show up at the meeting place. After being accused he fatally shot himself, according to the lawsuit. His sister said that the network “crossed the line from responsible journalism to irresponsible and reckless intrusion into law enforcement.”
US District Judge Denny Chin said: “A reasonable jury could find that by doing so, NBC created a substantial risk of suicide or other harm, and that it engaged in conduct so outrageous and extreme that no civilized society should tolerate it.”
