Lawsuit Settled Over Reverse Discrimination

A $1.6 million settlement has been agreed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors following a lawsuit that was filed by twelve police officers who accused the department of reverse discrimination, claiming that black candidates were favoured over white ones for promotion to lieutenant.
Although the lawsuit has now been settled the city is still not admitting to any wrongdoing with regards to the claims. According to the lawsuit there were thirty nine promotions to lieutenant between 1999 and 2003, and the suit claims that despite candidates of other races scoring better in tests they were passed over, and all five black candidates were given promotions.
The lawsuit was filed by nine white officers, two Latino officers, and an Asian American officer. However, city officials have claimed that race did not come into the equation when deciding who would get the promotions.
There were squabbles amongst the plaintiffs with regards to how to split the settlement, and it has been revealed that eight of them will receive one hundred thousand dollars each, one will receive two hundred thousand dollars, and three others who later received a promotion will receive fifty thousand dollars.
