A lawsuit has been filed by the mother of a teenaged that drowned last week, along with two fellow students, in the Fox River. The teens were on a school retreat when they drowned, and the mother of one of them has now filed a wrongful death lawsuit, naming a number of defendants as part of the lawsuit.
The lawsuit, which was filed earlier this week, names the campground where the event was held, the school, and the organizers of the retreat of defendants. The lawsuit was filed in Cook County Circuit Court by the mother of Melvin Choice III, one of the drowned teens.
Melvin was seventeen years old, and the other two students that also drowned were Jimmy Avant, aged eighteen, and Adrian Alexander Jones, aged sixteen. The event had been organized by VisionQuest International, an Atlanta group that trains teens in leadership skills.
The lawsuit alleges that the defendants had not secured paddle boats, and failed to warn students that the plugs at the bottom of the paddle boats had been removed. The report states that the boats had been put aside for the winter season.
