A lawsuit has been filed against a senior Passaic County official by plaintiffs that accuse her of forcing staff to spy on one another, making racist remarks, and harassment. The lawsuit has been filed against Passaic County Superintendent of Elections Laura Freytes , who took office in 2005.
According to the lawsuit, filed by Orlando Yepes, a senior investigator with the elections superintendent’s office, and Hilda Perez, a former secretary who worked for Freytes from July to September of 2006, Freytes was involved in racism, harassment, and frequently belittled staff.
The lawsuit states: “Shortly after her appointment as superintendent of elections, Freytes embarked upon a course of conduct toward plaintiff whereby she would routinely berate and embarrass plaintiff in public by accusing him of being a political ‘sellout’ “. One plaintiff also claims that she was “constantly badgering him to serve and act as her personal ‘snitch’ or ‘spy’ by observing and eavesdropping on co-employees within their office and reporting his observations to her.”
The lawsuit also claims racism, and states that the defendant “…made it publicly known throughout her office that she intended to transform the office to one in which all of her employees were of Puerto Rican extraction, to the exclusion of all others. Toward that end, Freytes increased her harassment, threats and insults to plaintiff, among others, because he was of Colombian extraction.”
