According to a recent report a lawsuit has been filed against the Lake County Jail and officers, claiming that the conditions in the jail are not only bad but also potentially life threatening. The lawsuit was filed by four men and seeks class action status.
Named as defendants in the lawsuit are Sheriff Roy Dominguez, two people who served as warden of the jail since May 2006 and a number of supervisors. The lawsuit was filed in US District Court in Hammond, and seeks unspecified damages.
Amongst the dangers that are allegedly present at the jail according to the complaints is MRSA. The complaint adds that people are held for weeks in crowded holding cells, and are often forced to sleep on the concrete floors.
It is further claimed that those in the holding cells are not given any means of hygiene maintenance such as soap or showers, and that often toilet paper is not provided. It was also claimed that in some cases forty men are sharing a toilet in a holding cell only designed to hold a few people.
