Judge Overturns His Own Decision Over September 11th Settlements

A judge who approved four settlements of between five and a half and eight million dollars in relation to the September 11th New York terrorist attacks has reversed his own decision, and has now rejected the four claims stating that they are too excessive.
Attorneys working on behalf of the four plaintiffs are now urging to judge, District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, to reconsider the decision to reverse his own original ruling. The judge had decided that the four settlements were excessive compared to the other claims that had been filed over the attacks.
The four lawsuits were part of a group of fewer than one hundred that were filed over the September 11th attacks, as around five thousand others received money from a fund that had been set up, which distributed over seven billion dollars altogether.
The judge also criticised the lawyers working on the four cases, stating that they had demanded a twenty five percent cut of the compensation, which was way more than the fifteen percent that lawyers handing most other cases had taken.
