A former police chief has filed a lawsuit after his contract was not renewed by his district. The former Albuquerque Public Schools police Chief Gil Lovato filed his lawsuit on July 3rd against the district, alleging that he was wrongfully terminated and that his civil rights were violated. He is also accusing the district of defamation.
The former chief had been suspended at the beginning of this year after allegations of improper practices in his department. After his June pay check his contract was not renewed. Lovato claims that he was trying to bring to light problems in the school when he was told that his contract would not be renewed.
The lawsuit claims that the way that this was done denied him to his right to free speech, and therefore violated his civil rights. His attorney stated: “The conduct of the Albuquerque Public Schools and lack of due process has been outrageous.”
According to lawyers for the district Lovato has no leg to stand on with his lawsuit, and district lawyers further claim that the ex-chief asked for half a million dollars in order to drop the lawsuit.
