Former Foster Children to Receive Share of $6 Million From State

Washington state is to pay out six million dollars in compensation by way of settlement to former foster children of Carole DeLeon, who was sentenced to six years in prison after entering an Alford plea to criminally mistreating some of the children that were in her care.

One boy, Tyler DeLeon aged seven, died of starvation whilst in her care, and his estate will receive a chunk of the compensation. The settlement with the state was reached in Spokane County Superior Court earlier this week.

A lawyer for the plaintiffs stated: “The decision boiled down to, ‘What is it going to take to take care of these kids for the foreseeable future given what happened to them in this home?'” A third of the settlement will go to the lawyers that represented the plaintiffs.

The DSHS has been accused of failing to investigate the background of DeLeon and another caregiver that worked with the children, and also failing to respond to many reports of abuse. Trials against a psychiatrist and a doctor are due to start in April, after claims were made that they were aware of the abuse to Tyler but failed to report it.
