A federal lawsuit against a Las Cruces police officer is to cost thousands of dollars by way of a settlement after the officer allegedly stopped a woman on a routine traffic stop and requested a kiss from her. Twenty two year old Mayra Leyva filed the federal lawsuit, claiming that the officer offered to tear up the traffic citations in exchange for a hug and a kiss.
According to reports the federal lawsuit has resulted in a settlement of forty thousand dollars, after the plaintiff accused the officer in question, Officer Anthony Coble, of personal injury and civil rights violations. Reports also state that the city had not admitted to any wrongdoing despite the settlement.
The city attorney Fermin Rubio stated: “This is an unfortunate situation. We’ve attempted to resolve the matter in a manner that is equitable and acceptable to all parties.” He added that the settlement of forty thousand dollars will be paid from the city’s liability fund.
The incident occurred in 2005, when the plaintiff was just twenty years of age and the officer discovered that she was driving on a suspended license after the routine stop. He then told her that he wanted “what every man wants” in exchange for tearing up the citations.
