Federal Agencies Settle Lawsuit over Global Warming

A lawsuit between two United States agencies and the federal government has been settled recently, after the agencies were accused of financing energy projects abroad without giving any consideration to what the effects would be on global warming.
The two companies involved are the Export-Import Bank of the United States and the Overseas Private Investment Corp. The lawsuit was initially filed in San Francisco federal court in 2002 by Friends of the Earth, and Greenpeace. Also involved were four cities that claimed to suffer as a result of the global climate change.
An official from Friends of the Earth said: “This settlement is a substantial victory for our climate. It will force federal agencies to move away from fossil fuel projects and account for the climate impacts of their lending.”
The four cities involved in the lawsuit were Boulder, Colorado, and the California cities of Arcata, Oakland and Santa Monica. They claimed that the effects of the various overseas projects being carried out by the two firms would be felt by the cities.
