DUI Charge Facing a High School Football Coach and Driver’s Ed Teacher

Ocala Police stated the high school teacher is facing a DUI charge due to being involved in a hit and run crash causing injuries and fleeing the scene. The high school teacher was suppose to start teaching drivers education soon but has now been placed on administrative leave at Dunnellon High School.
The head football coach, 42 year old William Price Harris is undergoing an internal investigation while on leave. School District spokesman Kevin Christian said Mr. Harris will not be teaching the summer drivers ed course.
Harris was unavailable for a comment.
Mr. Harris was driving a black Chevrolet pick up according to the Ocala Police department representatives. The truck rear-ended a stopped vehicle at the 3100 block of Southwest state Road traffic light on Saturday.
According the police Mr. Harris got out of his truck to speak with the driver but then drove away. The person he hit however followed Mr. Harris truck while on the phone with a 911 dispatcher.
The officers spotted the truck and followed it on the West State Road 40. Officer William Joedicke reported he and Officer David Moorehead stopped Mr. Harris on SR 40. When the officers approached the truck they split into both sides of the vehicle the driver side and passenger side. They noted the truck looked like it had been involved in a crash while they were talking to Mr. Harris.
In the police report it was noted by Officer Joedicke that there was a strong alcohol order coming from the truck, and that Harris’ eyes were glassy and bloodshot, he was also slurring his words and his face was flushed.
Mr. Harries confessed to the officers that he had had a few beers. The officers asked him to step out of his car and when he did they noted he was “unsteady on his feet” he also begged the officers to let his son pick him up and “not give him a DUI.”
Mr. Harris was playing in a Golf Tournament all day and had been drinking he told the officers “that was probably not a good decision.
Mr. Harris declined a breathalyzer test however he still did not pass the field sobriety test and was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail. He was released from Jail on Sunday in lieu of $6,000 bond at 10:25 in the morning.
According to Christian Mr. Harris was hired into the school system in January of 2014. His teacher home page states he has been teaching and coaching for 18 years. Mr. Harris lead the DHS Tigers to the Class 4A regional final, which they lost, this past season.
