Drug Distributors Sued By Woman Who Lost Son

A woman from the Illinois area in the United States has filed a lawsuit against two drug distributors after her four month old baby boy died after taking over the counter cough and cold medication. The lawsuit claims that the distributors of the drugs should of placed warnings about a key ingredient in the medicines that posed a danger.

The lawsuit was filed last week, and comes after health experts warned at Federal Drug Administration hearings that children under the age of six months should not be given such medicines, because not only can they be ineffective but they can also cause harm. The woman, Dimitria Alvarez, found her son dead in his cot in 2001 after he had been suffering from apparent cough and cold symptoms.

The lawsuit claims that the mother had given the baby two different medications, which were McNeil-PPC Inc.’s Infant Tylenol Cold Decongestant Plus Cough and Walgreen-brand Pediatric Drops-Cough Plus Cold. The medications contain the ingredient dextromethorphan. According to the coroner’s report the baby died from apparent dextromethorphan intoxication.
