A Roseville apartment complex has been accused of racial discrimination against potential black tenants, and has been taken to court by the US Department of Justice. According to officials potential black tenants were being denied access to apartments at the complex, yet potential white tenants were being told that there were units available.
The lawsuit has been filed against Regent Court Apartments, which is owned by Donna Harrison. The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court in Detroit. Grace Chung Becker, acting assistant attorney general for the department’s Civil Rights Division, stated: “This lawsuit seeks to ensure equal access to housing for African Americans.”
The alleged discrimination was discovered after the department carried out a testing operation in 2006, known as operation Home Sweet Home, where both black and white people posing as potential tenants were sent to various apartment complexes in the area. The aim of the operation was to expose any discrimination in the housing sector.
The lawsuit asks for an order to ensure that the discrimination is stopped, and wants compensation for the victims of the discrimination as well as civil penalties for the government.
