The Antioch Police Department has been accused of harassing and intimidating low income residents in the town in a bid to drive them out of town. Police have been accused of misconduct and racism, and a class action lawsuit has now been filed against the city in response to the alleged problem.
One official stated: “Today, five African-American women filed a class-action lawsuit against the City of Antioch, charging that the city and its police department are targeting African-American tenants in town and subjecting them to a campaign of harassment and intimidation.”
The number of houses being given to low income families that are being subsidized by the government has risen in this area, and these are known as section 8 rentals. One of the women involved in the lawsuit explained how an officer had searched her home, stating: “He pushed in my house comes in and rambles thought my items finding things to give Section 8.”
The woman said that the officer was clearly trying to find something that would get her disqualified from the Section 8 scheme. The officers are said to have been from the Antrioch Community Action Team.
