Former Employee Wins Settlement From School District

A former employee has received a settlement from a school district after she filed a lawsuit against the district in June of last year. The woman, Karen Young, was employed by the Baldwin School District, but in June of 2006 she filed a lawsuit claiming age discrimination. The plaintiff in the case has now received an out of court settlement according to reports.
Young was fired by Superintendent James White in June 2006. Young filed the lawsuit against the school district and against White, seeking over half a million dollars. In her lawsuit White cited “violation of age discrimination and negligent infliction of emotional distress.”
The settlement that was finally reached was actually for ten thousand dollars, with the district paying five thousand of it and the insurance company paying the other five thousand. The school District Attorney stated: “I look upon this as a victory for the school district, but, frankly, no one benefits in cases like this.”
The school board was advised of the settlement last week, and the trial had been set for September 11th. Another lawsuit against the district is still pending, which was filed by the former principal of Baldwin High School.
