Lawsuit Win For Wikipedia

Posted:

Wikipedia, the Internet giant, has won a landmark lawsuit filed against it, after a French court ruled that it was not responsible for content that was posted by its users. A lawsuit had been filed against Wikipedia by three plaintiffs, who were each seeking sixty nine thousand Euros. They filed the lawsuit over invasion of privacy.

The lawsuit came after the three plaintiffs’ sexuality was revealed through content that was posted on the site. The content on Wikipedia is written and contributed by anonymous contributors. However, a judge rejected the case filed by the plaintiff’s stating that Wikipedia was not responsible for the content posted by anonymous users.

A Wikipedia official stated that the decision of the judge confirmed that Wikipedia was simply an Internet host and not an editor. She stated that the information in question had been added to a Wikipedia article, but had then been withdrawn.

Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, as it is an open source Internet encyclopedia. Over one hundred people a month use the site, which was founded in 2001, and there are currently over eight million articles on the website in a variety of languages.
