Physician Records Subpoenaed in Death of Actor Corey Haim

Over 20 doctors have been served subpoenas in connection with the recent death of actor Corey Haim, said a representative for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Haim, an actor whose heyday was in the 1980s but who recently starred in an A&E reality show, had notoriously battled drug abuse for decades. Investigators have learned that, over the past year, he had obtained drugs with prescriptions written by multiple doctors, and with at least one fake prescription.
An autopsy performed on the actor, who was 38 when he died, showed pneumonia, water in the lungs, and an enlarged heart. Haim died on March 10 in his Los Angeles home. The coroner’s office has not yet learned the results of a toxicology report, which would reveal whether or not drugs were to blame for the death.
According to pharmacy records, Haim was able to procure “massive amounts” of pharmaceuticals in the past year, in part because he used so many different doctors and pharmacies. The most recent prescription filled for the actor was one for Vicodin, an addictive painkiller, on March 5.
“In the weeks before that,” said California Attorney General Jerry Brown, “more Vicodin, more Valium and other things. If you go back to 2009, you’re talking thousands of pills.”
Brown also said that if Haim had indeed taken all the pills which he had been prescribed in 2009 and 2010, the levels of medication in his system would have been “damaging.”
Last week, an arrest was made in connection with a prescription drug ring, to which at least one of Haim’s prescriptions was later linked. The drug ring, described as “illegal and massive,” operated by using stolen or falsified identities to obtain doctors’ prescription drug pads. The pads would then be either sold, or used either to the narcotics and other prescription drugs directly, so that they could be sold on the street.
Haim is perhaps best known for his role in the popular 1987 movie “The Lost Boys,” in which he starred with fellow teen heartthrob Corey Feldman. The two actors reunited to star in a reality show called “The Two Coreys,” which chronicled the pair’s sometimes friendly, sometimes adversarial relationship. It ran for two seasons in 2007 and 2008, on the Arts & Entertainment network, before being cancelled.
