Environmental Groups to Sue US Fish and Wildlife Service

A group of environmental agencies have announced that they plan to file a lawsuit against the US Fish and Wildlife Service, claiming that the service has introduced a policy that allows it to provide protection under the Endangered Species Act for one part of a species’ range.
Before a lawsuit is filed in relation to the Endangered Species Act a sixty day notice of intention has to be filed, and the coalition of environmental groups has now done this. The lawsuit is in relation to the government’s decision in July to no longer protect the Preble’s meadow jumping mouse in Wyoming whilst still extending the protection to the same species in Colorado.
Sylvia Fallon of the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington, D.C, stated: “The science is settled. The mouse is unique and in trouble. Mice don’t read maps – it makes no sense for protections to end at the state line.”
Erin Robertson of the Center for Native Ecosystems in Denver, said: “Endangered species around the country could lose protections unless this illegal move by the Bush administration is stopped right away. The fate of the mouse is important, but there is much more at stake.”
